ABOUT US
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
OUR LOCAL CHAPTER
Northwest Indiana Habitat for Humanity was formed in July 1986. As of January 1, 2010, there are over 54 Habitat homes located in Lake County, Indiana. Building on donated land, with donated funds and constructed with volunteer labor, our mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities to those in need.
There are plans to build the first home in Lake Station in 2011 and continue the "Field of Dreams" project resulting in 20 homes on Adams Street in the Midtown area of Gary. We look to build at least 4 homes in Lake County, IN by the end of 2011, when we will celebrate our 25th anniversary and completion of more than 58 Habitat for Humanity homes in Lake County.
The ReStore opened in March 2005 at 6114 W. Ridge Road in Gary and will help to make the above and future building projects possible. There are currently Habitat ReStores throughout the United States. A Habitat ReStore is a retail outlet recycling overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials, appliances and gently used home furnishings donated by manufacturers, store contractors and individuals. These donated items are sold at a fraction of normal prices to the public. All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.
