How to Help

Helping Habitat provide a Hand Up and not a Hand Out

  • Leave a Legacy: Live for Something Bigger than Yourself and Leave a Mark on the World.
    • Bequest
      • Designate Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana as the beneficiary of your asset by will, trust, or beneficiary designation form.
    • IRA Rollover
      • Congress enacted a permanent IRA charitable rollover; therefore, you can make an IRA rollover gift this year along with several years in the future.
    • Beneficiary Designation Gifts
      • You can designate Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana s a beneficiary of a retirement, investment or bank account or your life insurance policy.
    • Charitable Lead Trust
      • You fund a trust that makes gifts to Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana for a number of years. Your family receives the trust remainder at a substantial tax savings.
    • Give it Twice Trust
      • You provide your children with a stream of income while making a gift to Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana.

  • Home Donation
    • Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana is always looking for home donations. Whether the home is in mint condition or in need of some TLC, we have the capacity to tear down, rebuild if need be, and sell it to a struggling, working family with a 0% mortgage.

  • Land Donation
    • Habitat for Humanity builds on donated lots. Whether your property is located in Lake County, Indiana or in the U.S., we will either build on the donated lot, or sell it and build with the proceeds generated from your donation.

  • Monetary Donations
    • $95,000 is what it takes to build an affordable, energy efficient, 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom home in Lake County, IN. We currently build 6-7 homes per year: our goal is to build 10 homes a year by 2022.
      • Monthly donations:
        • For as little as a cup of coffee, your recurring $5 monthly donation adds up to purchase a brand new bathroom sink for a habitat home once a year! A $20 monthly donation will purchase a steel front door for a Habitat home!
      • Yearly donations:
        • If you donate by 12/31, your donation is a tax write off. We are more than happy to provide you with a receipt along with our 501(c)3 designation for accounting purposes.

  • Material Donations
    • ReStores
      • Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana has 2 resale shops called ReStores. We sell new and gently used donated items such as building materials, doors, windows, appliances, furniture and home décor. We have diverted over 1.5 million pound of landfill waste into our ReStores for resale. Check us out~Just because it’s used doesn’t mean it’s useless!
    • Home Builds
      • Generous contributions to Habitat help defray the cost of home building. New Siding, Entry Doors, cabinets, etc. are always in need, when building Habitat homes.
    • Cars for Homes
      • Cars for Homes™ (CFH) is the national vehicle donation program for Habitat for Humanity. Revenues from the sale of donated vehicles are disbursed to local affiliates based on the zip code of the donor, unless the donor specifies otherwise.
    • Lunch Donations
      • One way Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana thanks our volunteers is to provide a healthy lunch, water and snacks throughout the build day. If you would like to donate lunch or gift cards to a restaurant, we are always looking to defray the cost of our builds.

  • Volunteer
    • We cannot do this without you! Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana depends on volunteers weekly to work at our ReStores and our Home Builds.
      • Every Build day is critical; for Habitat, we build with volunteers who help turn our vision into reality: where everyone has a decent place to live.
      • Skilled and unskilled workers are welcome to assist with:
        • Raising Walls
        • Installing siding, windows and doors
        • Painting
        • Build Sheds
      • ReStores are the backbone to our success of building more homes. Volunteers are needed for many jobs in each ReStore.
        • Handling with care the loading and unloading of donations:
          • Cleaning each item
          • Testing the working pieces
          • Fixing items that may have been damaged during donation
          • Pricing
          • Donation Truck Route helper
    • Groups of 6-8 are welcome on our home build sites. Groups of 10-15 are welcome at each ReStore location.
